All pieces are individually made. The felt is naturally pressed and applied to an undulate form, this particular handcraft presupposes limited edition series and one-of-a-kind creations.
The Apaya Limited Edition is designed by Ayala Serfaty in collaboration with textile artist Irit Dulman. It includes unique pieces that are produced in a line restricted to only 40 items, each numbered and signed by Ayala Serfaty.
The Apaya Limited Edition exemplifies Ayala Serfaty’s passionate research of textiles and light. Combining ancient wool felting techniques with modern lighting technology, Apaya safeguards heritage whilst re-inventing its future. Celebrating the inherent qualities of natural color and fibrous structure, wool becomes a sculptural carrier of light in a uniquely aesthetic way.
Each piece is individually handcrafted. The mixing of pure white merino and mohair wools results in a one of a kind expression of light. Wensleydale wool curls or hints of colored wool are used to further accentuate the versatility of the material, creating a collection of undulating modern curves and tentacular softness.
The Apaya Limited Edition is made of natural fibers (mohair, silk, and wool) and hand-processed with ecological and environmentally friendly products. The natural colors and pigments are extracted from plants rather than synthetics, and the felting process involves an organic mixture of olive oil soap.
The pure wool and mohair is collected from specialized animal-friendly farms where the sheep are groomed and grown to produce the highest quality of wool fiber and curls.
Being the first of its kind, the handmade felted wool is molded into a singular sleeve that is easily slipped over a transparent cylinder that hosts the fluorescent bulbs powered by a digital ballast. Due to the modular quality and multitude of forms and colors the sleeves can easily be removed and exchanged seasonally or by mood.
The Limited Edition exemplifies a selection of contemporary lighting and is a luxurious addition to the Apaya Collection.
