Cabinets of wonder were part of a European tradition of collecting practiced by aristocrats and other wealthy individuals from the 16
th to the 18th century. These exhibition spaces held encyclopedic displays of strange, disturbing, surprising and exotic objects, which attested to the wealth and power of their owners. The first cabinets of wonder were created prior to the establishment of clearcut distinctions between science, philosophy, and art. This historical period was also marked by the first expeditions to the New World, and by the beginning of colonial trade relations between Europe and distant lands. Cabinets of Wonder were thus a quintessential product of their era: an expression of the human thirst for knowledge.

The current exhibition centers on contemporary artworks that are concerned with subjects similar to those featured in historical cabinets of wonder. This exhibition suggests that such contemporary artworks present a world view different than the one that shaped early cabinets of wonder – one impacted by the far-reaching changes that have reshaped the world and by the dramatic shift in our perception of it. The gaze cast upon these wonders by contemporary artists undermines accepted perceptions of the world, and attempts to introduce a sense of disorder into the existing order. The works included in this exhibition critically examine the concept of wonder, replacing the viewer's sense of amazement with an experience of disenchantment and bitter disappointment.

Ayala Serfaty: In Vein, Cristina Grajales Gallery, NY
Ayala Serfaty: In Vein, Cristina Grajales Gallery, NY, November 1st - December 23rd 2011

AYALA SERFATY: IN VEIN

November 1st – December 23rd, 2011.

Cristina Grajales Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in the United States of Israeli lighting and furniture designer Ayala Serfaty, In Vein.

In Vein is a collection of 16 new lighting and furniture pieces that highlight Serfaty’s exploration of ancient materials merged with contemporary design. Beginning with her Soma light sculptures, Serfaty manipulates glass and polymer to expose the delicacy and behavioral nuances of the object while communicating her interpretation of nature’s complex structures.
In her newest work, the complexity of design is focused on the intense exploration of hand made felt used to create contemporary furniture pieces. Serfaty views the object as a canvas, where silk, linen and wools are molded into emotional expressions in seamless upholstery. The combination of the layered fibers create a dense and intricate skin that provokes the viewers sensibilities.

Serfaty studied fine art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and Middlesex Polytechnic in London, where she completed her BFA. Alongside her artistic work, Serfaty has designed lighting and furniture for Aqua Creations Lighting & Furniture Atelier. The design firm has earned international recognition for its innovative designs, which combine craftsmanship with advanced technology. In addition to her commercial ventures, Serfaty continues to explore the boundaries of art and design through her installations and studio pieces.

Cristina Grajales Gallery is pleased to produce a limited edition book with this exhibition.

Design by Ofir Zucker & Albi Serfaty in Collaboration with Origami Artist Ilan Garibi

Molecules is a comprehensive lighting collection based on the origami art of Ilan Garibi.
The traditional Japanese art of paper folding begins with a blank sheet of paper which is folded and sculpted by hand into tessellations of individual molecules, with no cuts. The paper used for the origami lamp shades perfectly diffuses the light and easily resists the folding. A complement and contrast at the same time are the superior wood structures which derive their shape by digital wood carving. The lamps are powered by digitally dimmable LEDs, operated and controlled by touch. In Aqua’s tradition, natural materials and artisanal manufacturing interact with technology; the result is an elegant and luxurious lighting collection.

*Ilan Garibi is represented by Talents Design in Tel Aviv.

Lamps in the collection:
96 Molecules – Table Lamp,  ø30 × 21cm, 12 × 8in
96 Molecules – Tall Table Lamp,  ø31 × 39cm, 12 × 15in
96 Molecules – Floor Lamp, ø35 × 89cm, 14 × 35in
492 Molecules – Tall Floor Lamp, ø77 × 161cm, 30 × 63in
96 Molecules – Wall Lamp, 35 x 33cm, 14 x 13in

New Tokonoma Collection
New Tokonoma Collection, March 2011

Design by Albi Serfaty & Eitan Ben Tovim
The inspiration for this collection came from Tokonoma, a Japanese style reception area in which objects for natural and artistic appreciation and inspiration are displayed. The Tokonoma lamps were created in the spirit of such objects. The collection is refined and strikes through understated aesthetics and contemporary design. The materials used are handmade felt for the shades, and wood for the supporting stands. Aqua's artisans make the felt in four different finishes, using the finest merino wool and pure silk. Each finish represents one of the four seasons; Haru for Spring, Natsu for Summer, Aki for Autumn and Fuyu for winter. The wooden stands are shaped by digital wood carving. The lamps are powered by digitally dimmable LEDs, operated and controlled by touch.

Ayala Serfaty: Soma at Museum Beelden Aan Zee
Ayala Serfaty: Soma at Museum Beelden Aan Zee, November 2009

Aqua Creations' designer and artist, Ayala Serfaty created a work of art entitled SOMA ('body' in Greek). The SOMA light installation is on exhibit at Museum Beelden Aan Zee, in Den Haag, Netherlands for a period of three months. The SOMA light installation was first exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, in 2008 .

The artwork originated with materials research in which Serfaty and Aqua Creations' craftsmen have been engaged in since 2002. Thin filaments of glass were woven to produce spatial structures which are ultimately sprayed with a polymer to generate a skin-like layer, a membrane of sorts. The manual work process is akin to the transformation of an intimate calligraphy drawing into a three dimensional composition of architectural scale. Throughout the course of six years of development, “landscape formations” have crystallized to spawn the current installation, topography of light.

Soma at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art
Soma at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, November 2008

Ayala Serfaty has created her latest light installation for her first major solo museum show at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

The Assia Gallery at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art was transformed into an intimate sanctuary providing a modern contemplative environment in a preternaturally quiet ambience. After six years of research, what began as a fragile web of glass culminated in an installation of architectural scope entitled "Soma", meaning body in Greek. The installation is made up of thousands of glass filaments encased in a polymer membrane-like web floating atop a sunken surface covered in tiny glass beads. The exhibition was executed in collaboration with glass artists Eytan Hall and Anna Gautier will be on display until February 14, 2009.

Ayala Serfaty is delighted to announce the launch of a new web site featuring her artistic design achievements. The new web site offers six main areas for navigation and aims to provide viewers with updated resources about Ayala Serfaty's ongoing art practice, including her latest installation in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Aqua Creations Makes a Splash at Designers' Saturday!
Aqua Creations Makes a Splash at Designers' Saturday!, November 2008

On 8-9 November 2008 Designers' Saturday took place in Langenthal, Switzerland for the twelfth time. Aiming to provide an inspiration for top performance, Aqua Creations in collaboration with its Swiss distributor Sphinx Lichttechnik, chose to exhibit at Creation Baumann's warehouse.

Having the designs return to their place of origin - the factory - or as Le Corbusier envisioned "the birthplace of cultural renewal", an extraordinary and magnificent event took form. Given the dramatic, unconventional, and challenging exhibition space of an entryway and two 1.8 meters/ 5.9" wide, 40 meters / 131.23" long, and 25 meters/ 82" high aisles, Aqua Creations and renowned designer Michael Azulay were prompted to create a total environment that included movement, sound, and light, thus providing visitors with an unforgettable visit alluding to a deep sea dive.

The music, the movement, and the rich display of timeless Aqua favorites installed in the darkened corridors provided a view of the splendor, exoticism and delicate craftsmanship which stand at the core of Ayala Serfaty's designs.
